Amid the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's new policies on antibiotic use in animals, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association announced Monday it will host a webinar for beef producers to discuss the FDA changes.
The webinar, Preparing Cattlemen for Changing Antibiotic Use Regulations, is free for beef producers and begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time on June 23.
Dr. Mike Apley, DVM PhD, Professor of Production Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Kansas State University and Dr. Craig Lewis, DVM MPH, Veterinary Medical Officer, Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine, will be featured speakers.

What beef producers should know
The U.S. FDA in the spring of 2012 first proposed changes to how "medically important" antibiotics – those used also in humans – are used in animals. Namely, FDA called for the growth promotion uses of many products to be eliminated and for veterinarians to increase oversight of the remaining antibiotic uses.
The FDA released the changes in guidance for industry documents. On June 2, FDA finalized its veterinary feed directive rule, which explains simply that use of animal antimicrobials will be brought under veterinary supervision, and will be administered "only when necessary for assuring animal health."
The VFD rule also outlined guidelines for veterinarians in prescribing animal drugs intended for use in or on animal feed that require the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
Another guidance document calls on manufacturers of medically important antimicrobials administered through medicated feed or water to remove from their product labels indications for use related to growth promotion, and bring the remaining therapeutic uses of these products under the oversight of a veterinarian by December 2016.
The framework also is catching on in with livestock and meat companies, which have released outlines for either complying with FDA requests or initiating stricter antibiotic use standards.
