Changing Workforce Development Subject of Summit

Western Kansas Manufacturers Association's 2012 Workforce Summit follows the time "Managing Change through Creativity"

Western Kansas Manufacturers Association is sponsoring the 11th Annual Kansas Workforce Summit.  The 2012 Summit "Managing Change through Creativity" will be held Jan. 18-19 at the Topeka Capitol Plaza Maner Conference Center.

 Governor Sam Brownback and Secretary of Commerce Pat George are invited to kick off the Summit which will be keynoted by Mark Mayfield.  Mark, known as "The Corporate Comedian", presents solid business wisdom in a brilliant comedic style. His presentation, "The Glass Ain't Half Empty, It's Just Too Big," will focus on how businesses can best prepare for the changes that are coming in workforce development programs.

Also on the program for the first day is a business panel discussion "Emerging Industry: The Future of Kansas Industry." Kathy Howell, Chairman, Post-Secondary Tech Ed Authority, and President/CEO, Saint Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, will moderate. Panel members include Steven D. Hendrickson, Direction of Government Operations, The Boeing Company, and Kyle Bauer, KFRM Radio, discussing the aviation, health care and agriculture fields.

The final presentation of Day 1 will be "The Importance of STEM in our Competitive World Economy"  presented by Anita Krishnamurthi, director of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Policy, Afterschool Alliance. She will discuss the national education agenda and how states such as Kansas benefit from engaging in a collective effort for education.

Workforce Summit director Eddie Estes will close out the day with "Reflections on Day 1" followed by a reception and dinner, which will feature the presentation of this year's performance awards from the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Day 2 of the summit will feature a Kansas legislative update with Senate President Steve Morris, Speaker of the House Mike O'Neal, and House Representative Ann Mah, as well as a national update from U.S. Department of Labor ETA Regional Administrator Byron Zuidema. 

The Kansas Workforce Summit is an annual forum for employers, educators, community members, chamber representatives, legislators, government officials, and local workforce board members to address the new realities facing the workforce and economic development issues in Kansas.
