Cotton Important Crop During Drought in Southern Kansas

Harvest not as good as hoped earlier in year, but at least there is cotton headed to the gin.

Kansas is growing as a cotton producing state.

And this year, in the face of serious drought across much of the country's premier cotton-growing region, it plays a much bigger role than it has previously.

"When you have the Plains Cotton Cooperative calling and asking if we have cotton for the warehouse, you know it's bad elsewhere," says Gary Feist, manager of the Southern Kansas Cotton Growers gin at Winfield.

This year's harvest has not been as good as growers had hoped, but it has still been a success, Feist said.
