Disaster Designation Sought for Sherman County

Governor Sebelius seeks disaster status due to weather.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is seeking an agricultural disaster declaration for Sherman County because of drought, heat, high winds and hail between January and August this year.

In a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer, Sebelius said that weather events have adversely affected corn, sorghum, wheat, sunflower and pasture grass production and that hail damaged farm buildings and irrigation equipment.

A disaster designation from USDA will make farmers and ranchers eligible for low-interest loans as well as aid that may be available under the permanent disaster program in the farm bill passed this year.
