Pork Producers, U of M Extension Host Webcast

Free presentation March 28 at 12 locations will discuss rising corn prices, and feeding and management strategies.

Rising to the Challenge of Rising Corn Prices: Proactive Options for the Pork Industry will be the featured presentation at a free webcast to be held 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 28.

The webcast may be viewed from your own computer or at one of a dozen host sites. The webcast is sponsored by the Minnesota Pork Board and the University of Minnesota Extension.

Topics and presenters will be:

Corn Procurement and Risk Management Strategies by Brian Buhr, U of M Agricultural Economist: Impacts of ethanol demand on feed costs and pork industry production, economic potential of DDGS in diets, price risk management, and grain procurement and production management strategies to minimize the impacts on profitability.

Managing the Cost of Production by Mark Whitney, U of M Extension Swine Specialist: Production and management strategies to minimize the effect of higher feed costs on profitability including evaluating nutrient levels in diets, alternative ingredients, growth promotants and metabolic partitioners, feed management, genetic merit assessment, health status, and minimizing secondary costs.

Evaluating Short and Long Term Business Goals by Gary Thome, Farm Business Management Instructor, Riverland Community College: Analyzing the production and financial health of the operation, re-establishing business and production goals, and strategies to cope with marginal returns in the near future.
