Delegates to the Kansas Farmers Union annual convention held Jan. 12-14 in McPherson unanimously elected Don Teske, Wheaton, to his seventh term as president of the organization. Also unanimously re-elected as vice president was John Rempe, Corning.
Teske operates a grain and livestock farm with his wife, Kathy, in Pottawatomie County. In addition to his involvement at the state and national level of the Farmers Union, Teske sits on the board of the Midwest Agencies, the corporate entity for the Kansas and Nebraska Farmers Union Insurance Companies. He also serves on the state advisory committee for the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program through Kansas State University Extension, the Ogallala Commons Board and the executive board of the Kansas Rural Center.
Rempe farms in Nemaha County with his wife, Gladys. This is his second term as KFU vice president. Rempe has been involved in numerous state and national Farmers Union meetings, committees and events. In addition to his responsibilities on the state level, he also serves as president of the Nemaha County Farmers Union.
Reelected to the board of directors were John Fairbanks, Onaga, district three (northeast); LaVerne Potuzak, Agenda, district four (north central); Daryl Larson, McPherson, district seven (south central) seven; and Raymond Fowler, district eight (southeast Kansas).
Western Kansas voting delegates were unable to attend the convention due to weather and travel problems, which affected board elections for districts five and six. In board action following the convention, Linda Hessman, Dodge City, was appointed to the district six position. Hessman has served on the board for several terms. The board position for district five, which represents counties in northwestern Kansas, was left open.
"I'm looking forward to this coming year and working with the board of directors," Teske says. "This is a very strong board. The members are enthusiastic, aggressive and ready to accomplish great things."
Also elected during the convention were voting delegates to the 2006 Farmers Union national convention to be held March 2-5 in Orlando, FL. In addition to Teske, Tom Giessel, Larned, John Strunk, Wichita, and Fairbanks were selected to represent the organization. Don Turnquist, Lindsborg, and Hessman were selected as alternates.
