More than 500 of Wichita's leading supporters of agriculture and agribusiness turned out for Monday night's annual Beefeater Barbecue and Auction of Champions at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show.
Cargill Meat Solutions and Carlos O'Kelly's restaurants bought the show's Grand Champion Steer, a Maine Anjou shown by 13-year-old Cody Hrabe of Stockton. The winning bid was an even $10,000 for the 1,298-pound steer.
The Stockton seventh grader said he has worked with his steer, which he named Slammer, for more than a year, spending the last several weeks grooming, washing, brushing and walking the animal to ensure a top show quality coat and condition.
Farm Credit of Wichita purchased the reserve grand champion steer for a price of $5,000.
The top five animals in every show category - sheep, cattle, and swine -and the top three meat goats, were sold during the Auction of Champions.
Prior to the auction, 15 Kansas high school and college students were presented with scholarships for their college education funded by the annual barbecue which also includes silent and live auctions of donated products.
