Corn planting is nearly complete and the 74% that has emerged is off to an excellent start with 74% rated good to excellent, USDA's latest weekly crop progress report showed.
Soybean planting advanced to 61%, up from 31% a year ago and the 36% average. The corn and soybean numbers largely matched trade forecasts.
Corn's 74% emergence compares with 56% last year and the 62% average. Soybeans at 32% emerged compared with 23% a year ago and the 25% average. .
In top corn producer Iowa, 96% was planted from 94% a year ago and the 94% average. Emergence there was 81% versus 61% a year ago and the 71% average.
In Iowa, Illinois and Indiana soybean planting reached 70%, 69%, and 59% respectively. Illinois and Indiana are ahead of the averages, while Iowa trailed.
The frost reported a week ago in North Dakota, caused damage to "some canola and soybeans," the state report said this week. Also, some sugar beets in the Red River Valley will need to be replanted because of frost or flood damage.

The nation's winter wheat rating was unchanged at 45% good/excellent. The Kansas rating improved slightly to 30% from 29%.
The Kansas report said the state averaged about 1 inch of rain last week, with some areas receiving up to 3 inches. Some of wheat "stressed due to rust."
Spring wheat planting advanced to 96% from 70% a year ago and the 79% average. The crop was 80% emerged ahead of 40% a year ago the 54% average. Top producer North Dakota was 93% planted and 71% emerged, well ahead of the 68% and 43% five-year averages.
Spring wheat was rated 69% good to excellent, up from 65% a week earlier.
Sorghum was 41% planted, compared with 45% a year ago and the 46% average. Cotton was 47% planted, behind last year's 60% and the 61% average.
Topsoil moisture was plentiful in the Midwest and the Plains. Iowa was 97% adequate to surplus, Illinois 97%, Kansas 90%, Nebraska 86%, Oklahoma 81% and Texas 94%. North Dakota registered 96%.
