USDA Reviewing Recall Procedures

The agency is not happy with the length of time it took to initiate this week's meat recall.

The first report of illness from E. coli contaminated beef was received by the USDA on Aug. 31, but the recall wasn't issued until Sept. 25. Dr. David Goldman with USDA's Food Safety and Inspection says his agency is conducting a review of procedures dealing with these kinds of outbreaks.

"Our scientists and recall committee members have been reviewing the data related to this recall as well as our own protocols to determine how we might improve how we conduct these recalls in the future," Goldman says. "We've determined that there is room for improvement and we plan to act on the facts of our review immediately."

They are also reviewing practices at the New Jersey plant that produced the hamburger patties contaminated with E. coli.
