Veterinarians Can Get Help Repaying Student Loans

USDA program offers $25,000 a year in debt repayment in exchange for working in an area with shortage of veterinarians.

Applications can now be made by veterinarians who wish to participate in the USDA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program.

The program was originally passed by Congress in 2003, but was not implemented until a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill set a time table.

In return for a commitment of three years of veterinary service in an area designated as a shortage area, veterinarians can get up to $25,000 of student loan debt paid by the program.

Application forms can be found on the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture website at www.nifa.usda.gov.
