USDA to spend more than $116 million to fund improvements under American Recover and Reinvestment Act

USDA has announced the selection of $116.9 million in water and environmental project loans and grants to be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This brings the total USDA projects from the Act to more than $2.08 billion.

In a press statement, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack notes: "Recovery Act projects are helping rural communities of all sizes build a foundation for economic strength, future prosperity, and a healthy environment.

He notes this latest round of projects will create jobs. The agency points to the West Dallas Water Authority in Selma, Ala., which will get a $1.2 million loan nd #1.8 million grant to expand the water system in Dallas County - considered a persistent poverty county. This single project will include construction of new water distribution lines to provide potable drinking water to about 100 new residential customers in an unserved area. In addition, the county will get new generators to act as a backup power supply to provide more reliable water service during disasters and power outages.
