During a recent media event Michelin treated editors to a sideshow from the car tire side of its business. The company asked a key question - if you only replace two car tires where should they go? The answer is on the back, but many dealers and some "experts" will say on the front. Michelin demonstrated in a dramatic way that the best tires should be on the rear by taking editors for a spin on its high-tech hydroplane track at the Laurens Proving Grounds near Laurens, S.C.
Behind the wheel of a car with good rear tires it was easy to maintain control through several hydroplaning incidents on the fast circle-track, even under acceleration. However, get in the car with poorer rubber on the rear and the ensuing 720-degree double spin-out can be a scary ride.
So take a look at the wild ride at Michelin's Laurens Proving Grounds, where we were running cars on their hydroplaning circle. The circle will offer you 10 hydroplane events as you make the drive - and if you have great tires on the rear, you can keep control of the car.
