Wind Power Increases by 27% in 2006

An American Wind Energy Association forecast predicts sustained wind power growth in 2007.

The American Wind Energy Association says in a new market forecast that wind power generating capacity in the U.S. increased 27% in 2006 and will grow another 26% in 2007.

Congress recently voted to extend the federal production tax credit to help expand the number of wind farms through December 2008.

"The industry has demonstrated a generous return on the investment of both private and public investment in wind," says AWEA Executive Director Randall Swisher. "Extending the PTC five years will significantly increase the progress America is making in expanding its use of new forms of energy when they've never been needed more."

The industry outlook report found that the top five states for new utility-scale turbines were Texas, Washington, California, New York, and Minnesota.
