American Soybean Association Backs Nutrition Program

ASA voices support for Congressional reauthorization of a program that uses U.S. soy to provide children in developing countries with better nutrition.

The American Soybean Association Wednesday praised the legislation to reauthorize the George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition program, which helps to develop better nutrition for children in developing countries.

Senators Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., along with Representatives Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., and Jim McGovern, D-Mass., introduced the bill, which has used U.S. soy as part of its international school feeding program.

"Adding high-protein soy is a simple and cost effective way to help children," says ASA President Richard Ostlie. "For a few cents per serving, high-protein soy can be added to foods that are already popular with children in developing countries."

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 formally launched the program that received $100 million in fiscal year 2007 to fight hunger. The legislation introduced Wednesday would continue the program in fiscal years 2008 to 2012, under the oversight of the USDA. The bill calls for increased funding over five years, beginning with $140 million in FY 2008 and reaching $300 million in FY 2012.
