Association to Give Away Free Polypay Starter Flock

FFA and 4-H members eligible.

Receive three registered Polypay ewes plus $100.00 buying credit at next year's National Polypay Sale toward the purchase of another ewe or ram.

Once again, the American Polypay Sheep Association will be giving away a starter flock this year. Three registered polypay ewes and $100 buying credit are going to be given away at the 2008 National Sale. Any FFA or 4-H member in the United States between the ages of 8-19 by March 15, is eligible to apply.

The Polypay breed is known as one of the premier production sheep breeds in the world. These production standards continue today. The breed is also well received in shows around the country. The national show and sale, held in Springfield, Illinois in June, is the highlight of the show season. A tremendous junior show is held in conjunction with the national show and sale and has all of the major classes and a very popular futurity class. Futurity ewes are purchased as a lamb and exhibited in the futurity class the next year as a yearling. One of the ewe lambs given away will be futurity nominated for the 2009 National Junior Show.

The Polypay breed uses NSIP (National Sheep Improvement Program). This program uses EPD's (Expected Progeny Differences) to measure the production of sheep. The traits that are measured are weaning weight, maternal milk, milk and growth, post weaning weight, and numbers born. The association will waive the first year NSIP fee if recipient enrolls in NSIP. One ewe will come with EPD numbers. The winning recipient is not required to join this program.

The Polypay breed has a website, or it can be researched at If you would like to start a new flock or increase your flock with Polypay genetics, we would like to help. If you are between the age of 8-19 by March 15, 2008, considering sheep as a 4-H or FFA project, or adding to your flock, call or e-mail for an entry form and more details of this exciting new program.

The entry deadline is March 15, 2008.
