Graziers Set Winter Conference for Jan. 17

The Kansas Graziers' Association will offer ideas for helping graziers analyze their costs, extend the grazing season and improve their bottom lines during the annual Winter Grazing Conference in Assaria on Jan. 17.

Featured speaker for the event is Terry Gompert, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Grazing Eeducation, who manages his own herd in northeast Nebraska.

Gompert is currently using a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant to study three types of beef production, organic grain-fed, organic grass-fed and grass-fed beef.

His topics for the day will include "The Functional Cow - Picking the Right Cow for Your System" and "Extending the Grazing Season - Planning Forages to Reduce Hay Needs."

Additional conference topics will include interactive discussions on ideas on making money for the beef producer and lessons learned from beef producers. Dale Kirkham from the Kansas Rural Center and grazier Dale Strickler will facilitate the discussion.

The conference will be at the Assaria Lutheran Church, 124 W. First Street. Lunch will be served. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and costs $25 per person. The sesson will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Contact Mary Howell at 785-292-4955 or at [email protected] by Jan. 12 to register.
