The White House is considering whether to nominate Senator Judd Gregg, R-N.H., to be Commerce Secretary. Gregg has confirmed that he is under consideration. Gregg said beyond that there is nothing more he could say at this time.
Gregg has asked New Hampshire Governor Jim Lynch to name a Democrat to replace him in the Senate. Gregg says he will not serve the President if the Governor refuses to name a Democrat.
The appointment of a Democrat to succeed Gregg would reduce the number of Republican senators to 40, taking away their ability to block legislation through filibusters if Democrats also win an undecided Senate race in Minnesota.
