Eight professional truck drivers from Kansas have been recognized as the winning team for the 2013 National Truck Driving Championships – the first time a Kansas team has taken home the first place trophy in the competition.
Members of the winning team and other individuals were also recognized for placing in the competition.
"The Commission is pleased to recognize eight professional drivers who have demonstrated exemplary performance, representing Kansas with great distinction. Their service to the motor carrier profession, and dedication to keeping our roadways safe, is truly extraordinary," said Mark Sievers, Chairman, Kansas Corporation Commission.
Drivers had to have been accident free for the 12 months immediately prior to the contest in order to compete
During the competition, they were challenged on their knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. The team from Kansas won honors as the highest scoring state team – winning the 2013 National Truck Driving Championships team trophy.

Members of the Kansas team included Jeff Davis, Wal-Mart Transportation of Ottawa; David Eckles, Jr., Old Dominion Freight Lines of Spring Hill; Stanley Gabbard, UPS Freight of Kansas City; Gary Harms, Wal-Mart Transportation of Olathe; Dan Jones, FedEx Freight of Topeka; David Knight, Wal-Mart Transportation of Ottawa; Don Logan, FedEx Freight of Topeka and Jeff Thompson, FedEx Freight of Olathe.
In addition to being a Kansas team member, Gary Harms was named 2013 Bendix National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion, competing against 422 other truck drivers from all across the United States. He also placed first in the Sleeper Berth class. Harms has logged 30 years as a driver with 1.7 million miles behind the wheel.
Along with his Kansas team membership, Dan Jones placed third in Straight truck class, while Dan Logan was recognized as a Flatbed finalist. Logan also had a perfect score on his written exam and received the top vehicle inspection award.
Kansas team member Jeff Thompson was a 3-axle finalist and received a perfect score on his written exam.
