LMA Asks High Court to Hear Horse Plant's Case

Industry partners help fund filing of brief.

The Livestock Marketing Asssociation filed an amicus curiae brief Friday with the U.S. Supreme Court asking the court to hear the Cavel International Inc. appeal of the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decision to uphold an Illinois law that bars processing horses for meat for human consumption.

LMA says the Illinois law forced the plant to close, and the plant's shutting has resulted in 40,000-60,000 horses per year that are now dying from neglect or being killed using practices that are outside the protection of the Humane Slaughter Act. LMA says the circuit "failed to address the adverse impact" of the law.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Kansas Livestock Association, Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association and Texas Cattle Feeders Association helped fund the preparation and filing of the brief. To view the brief, visit www.lmaweb.com.
