More Beef Could Be Headed to South Korea

The country's government says it's ready to discuss full beef imports with the U.S.

The South Korean government said Monday it will begin talks with the U.S. over the possibility of importing U.S. beef with bones. The government didn't give a time frame on when the negotiations would be completed.

The announcement comes following last week's announcement by the World Organization for Animal Health that the U.S. is a "controlled risk" country for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, in response to which the U.S. requested to renegotiate.

"We respect the decision made by World Organization for Animal Health. We will sincerely handle the import term negotiation (with the U.S.), and hope to finalize the procedure in a reasonable time band," the government said in a joint media conference by the Ministry of Finance and Economy and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
