USDA/DOJ Hold Third Competition Workshop

USDA/DOJ Hold Third Competition Workshop

Focus of this workshop was on the dairy industry.

The third of five USDA/Department of Justice workshops was held in Madison, Wisc. on Friday. This time the focus was on the appropriate role for antitrust and regulatory enforcement in the dairy industry. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ's Antitrust Division Christine Varney led the workshop. It examined competition in the dairy industry and featured panel discussions on trends in the industry, market consolidation and market transparency.
Vilsack says the dairy industry has been hit particularly hard over the past 18 months and is experiencing consolidation and shrinking farm numbers. He says a fair and competitive marketplace is important for producers and consumers and that Friday's dialogue will provide USDA with a better understanding of the complex issues in the industry and help them determine how to ensure competition and fairness. Varney called Friday's discussion immeasurably helpful as the Justice Department considers ways in which government can help ensure efficiency and competition in the dairy industry.
