USDA Rural Development State Director Patty Clark has announced that 12 communities in Kansas have eceived financing from USDA Rural Development to fund projects that help rural communities improve infrastructure and public safety.
"USDA offers critical financing to rural Kansas communities to improve essential services to rural Kansas residents," stated Clark. "With federal financing assistance, these communities are improving the quality of life for their residents, and creating communities that are built to last."
USDA Rural Development financing is being provided through the Water and Environmental Program and Community Facilities Program. The Water and Environmental Program provides financing for drinking water, sanitary sewer, solid waste and storm drainage facilities in rural areas. The Agency's Community Facilities Program offers funding to construct, enlarge, or improve community facilities for health care, public safety, and community and public services.
The 12 communities are receiving a total of $9.7 million in loan and grant funding from USDA Rural Development.
City of Anthony – $6,600 grant. Funding will be used to purchase and install a new storm siren for the city.
City of Chetopa – $1.116 million loan and $888,000 grant. Financing will be used to install approximately 26,000 linear feet of water line, replace 305 water meters and install 21 fire hydrants. This is the second and final phase of the city's water improvement plan.
City of Culver – $183,000 loan and $296,000 grant. Financing will be used to construct a water treatment plant to remove iron and manganese, update the city's chlorination building and construct a 50,000 gallon water storage tank.
City of Edmond – $16,500 grant. Funding will provide the city with a grant to install a storm warning siren for the city.
City of Goessel – $3,700 grant. Funding will provide the city with a grant to purchase and install a new storm siren for the city.
City of Green – $201,000 loan and $95,000 grant. Financing will be used to construct a new ion exchange water treatment plant to improve the quality of the water.
City of Ongton – $75,000 loan and $415,700 grant. Financing will be used to install approximately eight miles of transmission water lines, a telemetry system that measures water flow and quality, and a 50,000 gallon elevated water storage tank.
City of Long Island – $533,000 loan and $554,500 grant. Financing will be used to replace 27,700 linear feet of water distribution lines, install 78 water meters, 20 fire hydrants and construct a new well.
City of St. John – $9,700 grant. Funds will provide the city with a grant to purchase and install three storm sirens for the city.
Crawford County – $13,000 grant. Funds will be used to install a new sign for the Crawford County Health Department that is located in Pittsburg.
Public Wholesale Water Supply District No. 18, Holton – $3.281 million loan. Financing will be used to improve the filtration system of the water treatment plant.
Rural Water District No. 4, Chautauqua County – $1.007 million loan and $1.022 million grant. Financing will be used to install approximately 60 miles of water line and 96 individual meters. This is the third and final phase of the district's water improvement plan.
USDA Rural Development is working with rural communities to create jobs, expand opportunity, encourage innovation and build a strong foundation for the future.
