USDA's Farmers Market Begins 15th Season

Opening will feature cooking demonstrations and theme of 'In Our Neighborhood.'

Deputy Ag Secretary Kathleen Merrigan begins the 15th season of the USDA Summer Farmers Market Friday. The theme of the day is "In Our Neighborhood" and includes demonstrations by Executive Chef of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Eric Ziebold with locally grown strawberries in a strawberry shortcake recipe and non-alcoholic fruit cocktail.

The Farmers Market, which sees up to 2,000 shoppers each market day, is held every Friday from 10 a.m. to noon until October 29 with fruits, veggies, herbs and bakery goods from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia highlighted. A chef from one of D.C.'s most exciting restaurants will host cooking demonstrations the first Friday of each month. They'll also have live music and other special guests throughout the season.
