Who Owns DNA Test Data?

Companies can only use data with producer's permission.

A beef producer this week at National Cattlemen's Association annual meeting this week asked the pertinent question of who owns the data from DNA profiling.

During a meeting with Pfizer Animal Genetics's Ronnie Green this week at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association annual meeting, Green assured producers that they own all that data. The company uses the data only with the producer's permission.

IGENITY, another major firm testing cattle and providing DNA profiling, has basically the same agreement with its customers.

The producer owns the information, the company says, and it remains confidential unless the producer chooses to share it. However, IGENITY does use the data in its benchmark software, but it is not disclosed whose cattle make up the group.
